Everyone I know makes at least one resolution at the beginning of each year. I’ve decided 2010 will be the best year yet of my journey as a photographer. Some lists go to ten but my list goes to 11.
In 2010 I will…….
- Take More Photos – I’m always making excuses not to take a photograph. It is either too dark, too cold, too many clouds, not enough light, to much light, wrong quality of light, uninteresting subject matter, too windy, too cliche, etc….. In 2010 I will just shut up and make the photo.
- Hear “No” 100 Times - 99 percent of the time I don’t bother people. I hate the idea of being a nag or hearing “no”. I defeat myself by never asking anyone for their photo or for an opportunity. Not in 2010! I’m asking everyone if I can have their photo or work with them. If I can get 100 noes I should be able to get some yeses.
- Finish Reading a Book – Photography and the Art of Seeing
has been sitting in my office for a long time. Why haven’t I finished it?
- That Next Piece of Gear - I’m always thinking of that next piece of kit. I need to focus on getting the best out of what I have. God has blessed me with more photography gear than I need.
- Print a Portfolio – I don’t have a proper portfolio and I don’t print much. Both of these situations will change in 2010.
- Get Organized - My current method of cataloging my photos is good but I need to remediate my old files too.
- Participate in Online Challenges – I know I’m going to loose some if not most of them but it should keep me shooting. Regardless of the outcome I should walk away with good photos that I would not have made otherwise.
- Start a Project – Monthly, quarterly or yearly…. I need to decide on a cadence for a photo project and start on it.
- Volunteer My Services – Help someone less fortunate by volunteering my services. Help Portrait should be a good start.
- Camera, Never Leave Home Without It – I used to keep an Epson RD-1 with me all of the time. I made some great photographs in situations where I would been without a camera otherwise. I sold the RD-1 and I haven’t had another camera that I felt comfortable carrying. I can’t tell you how many great photo opportunities that I have missed.
- Journal - Writing in my journal will keep me accountable to my resolutions.
Have you made any resolutions or do you find any of the above pertinent to you? Let me know!

Great list… I’ll have to put one together myself. Liana and I talked about some goals for our business, but I’ve haven’t given my personal goals much thought.
